collaborative art show!

ok, so i'm planning this collaborative art show, where everyone involved does a self portrait... the catch is that it's a self portrait of yourself AS yourself. so now an explanation: since i personally have had trouble with the differences between how i see myself and how everyone else sees me, i was thinking maybe other people have had the same experiences. the point is really about the process of creating this self portrait (although the show itself will be important too, of course), because i encourage anyone who wants to get involved to use the time that they spend working on it really thinking about and meditating on their own self-image. an artist's statement about your experiences would be a good addition as well.

now you don't have to be an art student or graduate or even make art on a regular basis or at all really. it can be sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, film... etc etc! also, it doesn't have to be realistic by any means either. if you feel, for example, that the color orange is the best you can come to describing the wholeness of yourself, paint that canvas as orange as you can get it! but just think think think and certainly let me know if you're interested, if you know anyone who would be interested, or if you have any questions.

i'm not sure exactly when it will be, but i'm thinking later in the summer just so everyone will have time to finish. i approximate that the space is about 12ft by 12ft, and i think three walls are able to have stuff up on them. there's no real size limit, but i just ask that everyone be respectful of the fact that there will be a lot of other people who need to put stuff up. also, since the tinderbox will be having music shows as well, possibly and probably during the time the show is up, everything has to be able to be moved easily just so nothing gets ruined. all art will be stored probably in our cars, so please keep that in mind as well when you're considering size.

you can email me at christensen.meg@gmail.com if you're interested in participating. there's an event on facebook as well.

post script...

152 cigarette boxes at $3.77 a piece totals to $573.04, at which ramey commented, "i just threw up in my mouth a little... i've been smoking since i was 16."

oh yea and it's 3040 cigarettes. holy smokes.

cigarettes!

ramey smokes a lot of cigarettes. so i decided to dedicate a wall to her.

the hearts are hand embroidered, and they're all machine sewn. i also soaked them in oil prior to assembly, giving them this translucent look. when i install it for my textiles critique, hopefully i can fix the lighting just right and get some better photos. the dimensions are 19 boxes by 8, and i haven't actually measured it in inches or feet... that ends up being 152 boxes, just by the way.

test video.

here's a test video of the stop-motion animation i'm working on. it's before icarus was finished, and it has got a weird texture on it that i kind of hate, but whatever. it's a test.

digital drawing.

i'm taking digital drawing, and these are the two assignments i've finished. the first was done solely in illustrator, the second solely in photoshop.

the blue background in the second one actually is supposed to be a dark sepia brown, but i actually like how it fucked up in the upload, so i'll leave it. it was to illustrate "a creature dreamed by kafka" in the book of imaginary beings by jorges luis borges.

icarus & dedalus.

i'm working on a film, the story of icarus. it's stop-motion animation, mixed with rotoscoping. these are the figures, all needle-felted with a wire armature so they can be moved easily. the wings are felted with feathers sewn on and leather straps.

more to come about that.

blue.

assignment for a textiles class this semester, "blue." i decided to knit a pair of eyeballs... the blues, tears, blue eyes? oh you get it. they're about 10 inches in diameter.

adam.

this is a figure i needle-felted last semester (fall 08) for a textiles class. his name is adam.

so here's what happened:
the original idea was to have a skeleton made of wire and wool and attach individually needle-felted muscles and skin to said skeleton with timelapse video.

oh i did it alright... i spent 8 hours with a felting needle and gloves on a lightbox, attaching each muscle in the right place, connecting all of the pieces of his body. i was creating a human from scratch (thus the name adam...), and that was the point of the film.

and then when it was all done, and i was exhausted and bordering on completely out of it, i tripped over the cord to my external harddrive on which it was all being recorded.

twice.

so i had to come up with something else, and i can't say i'm not pleased with the results. the concept was changed a bit, but i think it was for the best. it all worked out, i guess. here's the video:

you mean, you don't have a blog?

i've managed to resist the urge to get a blog for art or music or anything really for a very long time... then the other night i had a dream in which i started one and took that as a sign to jump into the 21st century. and yea, my dreams are sometimes kind of boring sometimes.

maybe i can stay a bit organized for once!
